Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 55 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Yield: 1 meatloaf
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

For the Meatloaf

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Tomato Sauce

  • 3/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let them sit for about 2 minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
  3. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a large spoon until the ingredients are evenly combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the meatloaf dense.
  4. Shape the mixture into a compact loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet or in a baking dish.
  5. Bake for 35 minutes.
  6. While the meatloaf is baking, combine the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and oregano in a small bowl.
  7. Remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the tomato sauce mixture evenly over the top.
  8. Return the meatloaf to the oven and bake for another 20 minutes, or until the center reaches 160°F (71°C) when checked with an instant-read thermometer.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Final Thoughts

This classic meatloaf combines seasoned ground beef with a tender breadcrumb mixture and a savory tomato topping. Letting it rest before slicing helps the loaf hold its shape and makes it easier to serve.
